stitchrobot advice: iPhone plans in Mexico suck.

Telcel has made a big fuss over how heavily they’ve subsidized the price of the iphone and indeed they have. an 8gb iphone can be had for as little as 889 pesos or about 85 USD. That’s way less than the suggested retail price of $200 USD that apple announced. All is not golden however in the land of telcel and buyers should pay attention. Telcel’s plan’s are crap, the most expensive plan at 799 pesos a month includes a paltry 200 mins, but worse so it includes only 200mb of 3G data usage. Each additional KB is .04 of peso, which may not seem that steep but can very quickly add up. some quick math:

  • 1mb = 1000 KB at .04 per KB = 40 pesos
  • average itunes song 3-6mb = 120 - 240 pesos
  • average size of an itunes store application 4 mb = 160 pesos.

The iphone is arguably one of the most data centric devices. Even before you add applications like instant messaging or mobile flickr. The Maps application and Youtube app suck through bandwidth like a newborn does milk on its mothers tit. So I imagine new iphone users, will, in their enthusiasm about the phone, run through their 200mb whilst showing off all the cool things it can do, and little will they know how much each extra mb of data will be costing them.

The cost of an unlimited 3G data plan with telcel 699 pesos on top of the 799 you may already be paying. So that 889 pesos iphone is going to get expensive rather quickly.
