Daily Tech Tip - 2 for 1: Wifi & Passwords

Get more info about the wifi connection you’re using by holding down the option key whilst clicking on the Airport icon. Saddly it only works on a signal you’re connected to but it does give you some handy info, including what type of 802.11 connection it is and the signal strength.

The second tip is one that highlights a little known part of the Mac Os: Keychain.

Keychain is where the Mac stores all of those passwords you choose to save. Everything from AIM to Wifi network passwords*. This also makes it a very handy tool for fishing out passwords for things that have been set to auto log in like Skype or your home Wifi Network. So next time a guest ask for your network password you don’t have to go flip over your 2Wire modem and read the default password. Keychain resides in your Utilities folder or you can just find it using spotlight.

*Once you realize just how much is stored in keychain you may decide that “Hello” is not really a very good password for your Mac’s user account.
