Ladies and Gentleman welcome to 1984, except big brother isn’t government but tons of small data mining software companies which have now started to jump on the iphone band wagon.
The iphone is an always connected, GPS location aware, computer which also carries your entire list of contacts.
some apps are very willing to grab as much of this data from you as they can. So buyer beware.

Data Rot is a shitty analogy Mr. Pogue but the meat of the article is very informative. Tech changes quickly. I have a stack of floppy’s and Zip Disk that i assume i could read if i went to the trouble of finding a usb ZIP drive but i’m pretty certain it wouldn’t be easy.
In short the best back-up for your digital life is analogue.

In the 90’s not upgrading from a Pentium 1 to a Pentium 2 meant nearly instant obsolescence. Things moved quickly and even newer versions of office needed the latest and greatest. That isn’t so much the case any more and this site is a wonderful ode towards making good use of last years gadgets.
